Four Hornets earn EPC gold
Four Emmaus seniors finished their East Penn Conference track and field careers with gold medals at last week’s league championship meet, held Tuesday and Wednesday at Whitehall High School.
Claudia Walls won two individual events at the meet, while teammates Mady McCartney, Jathniel Feguiere and Robert Edwards also earned gold medals.
Walls cleared 5 feet, 3 inches in high jump last Wednesday for her fourth straight EPC gold medal in the event.
“Freshman year it was more of a shock,” she said. “Throughout I just keep proving myself and being consistent. The competition has been getting better every year and so have I. It’s really hard to win four times so I’m really grateful.”
Walls’ winning jump wasn’t quite the height she hoped for, but she will look to get to 5-5 or even equal a career-best 5-6 when she competes in this week’s District 11 Championships.
“I would have liked to jump better,” Walls said of leagues. “I got some of them on my second and third attempts, which is OK. I’m happy with my performance, but hope to jump higher at districts next week.”
Walls also earned her first league medal in triple jump last week when she won the event Tuesday with a leap of 37 feet, 1/2 inch in just her second year competing in that event.
McCartney, the 2025 PIAA Class 3A cross country champion, ran two league record times in her final league track meet last week. Only one of them was good for gold.
McCartney won the 3200 meter run at the EPC Championships with a league record time of 10:46.47. She broke her own record, which was 10:52.18 set in 2024. Her best time in the event is the 10:29.51 she ran to second place at last year’s state championship meet.
McCartney also ran a district record time of 4:40.52 to take second place in the 1600-meter run last Wednesday. Liberty’s Elizabeth McClarin won the event in 4:57.29, beating the record of 5:00.21 set by EHS graduate Hailey Reinhard in 2023.
Edwards took first place in shot put with a throw of 55 feet, 1 inch, earning his first league medal after a fifth-place finish as a junior. Medals go to the top four finishers in each event.
Edwards took the top spot last week ahead of teammate Colin Nonnemacher, who heaved the shot 47-6 1/2 feet for second place in the event.
Feguiere tied for first place in high jump as both he and Joshua Ivers-Green earned gold medals in the event with a height of 6-3.
Several other Hornets earned medals at the league championship meet.
Nicholi Marsh finished second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 100 at leagues. Four relay teams took second place including the girls 4x400, and all three EHS boys relays.
Third-place finishers from Emmaus included Kayleen Louis (shot put), Rien George (200), Michael Carwell (1600) and Roen Woolf (3200).
Hornet athletes were earned fourth-place medals at leagues were Grace Nosal (1600), Marleigh Llewellyn (100 hurdles), London Barrett (800) and Logan Conn (high jump).
The Hornets finished second in team standings in both the girls and boys meets. Parkland took the boys title with Easton finishing first in girls team standings.
