The Hilltop Quilters at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1415 Rising Sun Road, Laurys Station, have sewn a red, white and blue quilt as a salute to 250 years of America’s freedom. The quilt will be raffled July 5 after the Sunday worship. Call 610-262-8061 to obtain tickets.

St. John’s UCC Pastor James Gottwald, Jackson Pyne and Daniel Pyne traveled to Liberia in March to visit the Bible Mission School near the city of Zwedro. They met with students, teachers, the principal and many parents.

Gottwald reported the children have great potential and several hope to become medical doctors.

Students are in need of textbooks, workbooks and other school supplies.

Teachers are paid $50 to $75 a month.

Parents are happy with the school and encourage one another to get their children there on time.

One parent is providing breakfast at $. 25 to $. 50 a meal.

The building is in very poor condition and would never be acceptable in the United States.

Gottwald reported a new building is under construction for the school but needs funds for a roof and floors.

At the end of March, members of the Journeymen of Union Lutheran Church traveled to North Carolina on a service trip to help people impacted by Hurricane Helene. They are working on the buildings inside and out to repair damages from the storm.
