McClarin wins EPC golds
Bethlehem Catholic, Freedom, and Liberty’s track and field teams competed in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship meet on May 5 and 6 at Whitehall High School.
Liberty captured the most medals with 13, Freedom collected two medals, and Bethlehem Catholic earned one medal.
Hurricane sophomore Elizabeth McClarin took first place in the 1600 meter run (4:57.29), beating top-seeded Madelyn McCartney from Emmaus.
“I didn’t make the move until the last lap, right before the last 400,” said McClarin. “It wasn’t necessarily where I thought I’d make the move, but it was my plan to pass her at some point and keep inching my way up. I wanted to make sure I had a lot of confidence in my move, so I was like, I’m just gonna take it, and it worked out. I was really thrilled.”
McClarin also won gold in the 800 meter run (2:17.76), and teammate Katie Drabouski came in fourth in the same event (2:21.47).
Earlier in the meet, Drabouski won the silver medal in the 3200 meter run (11:05.60).
“I just kind of wanted to see what I could do and go out and stick with [Emmaus’ Madelyn McCartney], and it kind of worked the first half, and then I fell off a little bit,” Drabouski said. “I ran the 4 x 8 earlier in the day, so I just wanted to see what I could do. I think I am capable of more.”
Liberty’s Anthony Otero took second place in the long jump (22-05.00), and Gavin Bailey was second in pole vault (12-09.00).
Third place medals for the Hurricanes were awarded to Joshua Cazares, Logan Malozi, Quinton Brown, and Riley Kutz for the boys 4x8 relay (8:28.96) and McClarin, Drabouski, Cali Sobrinski, and Ava Kopetskie for the girls 4x8 relay (9:47.40).
Abigail Hackett placed third in the 100 meter dash (12.54) and the long jump (6-11.50), and Denver Brown came in third in the triple jump (36-02.00).
The Hurricane girls 4x4 relay placed fourth (4.10.16) as well as the boys 4x1 relay (43.32).
Freedom junior Natalie Ray was the 400 meter dash silver medalist (56.52).
“I’m definitely happy with how I did today, but I do know there’s things that I’ll work on this coming week to get ready for districts, but I’m happy that I did what I did today,” Ray said. “I think my mental prep needs to be a little bit better, and I also think I need to make my move a little bit earlier and get out a little bit faster.”
Patriot teammate Michael Stofanak won the fourth place medal in the javelin throw (167-08).
Bethlehem Catholic’s Brandon Andrews, Aidan Rivera, Zemi Rodriguez, and Armando Thom took fourth place in the 4x4 relay (3:30.21).
