LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Jenkins family competes

For the past four years, Catasauqua’s Hailey and Hamaad Jenkins have been among the elites in sprints in the Colonial League and throughout the Lehigh Valley.

Hailey won her fourth straight title in the 100 (12.11) and also captured the 200 (25.19) race, and Hamaad was fifth in the 100 (11.17) and second in the 200 (22.14) at the league meet.

Looking to defend her 100 title, Hailey was pleased with her performance, but she had some anxiety.

“I’m very happy with how I ran in leagues,” beamed Hailey. “Obviously there were some nerves going into the 100 and 200 because I had titles to defend.

“Being a four-time champ really means a lot to me.”

Her brother viewed the league meet as a proving ground for the future.

“Leagues was a test of what I need to improve on and what my strong suits are,” stressed Hamaad. “I’ve learned a lot from leagues considering the regular season wasn’t that much competition, but leagues had proven my block start needs to improve. The last 40-50 meters of my 200 could be better. These upcoming practices before districts and states will work on speed endurance and blocks very consistently.”

Last season, Hailey was second in the 100 (12.24) as well as second in the 200 (25.81). Hamaad was second in the 200 (22.41).

Heading into districts, Hailey doesn’t plan to change her approach.

“At this point in my career, I don’t think changing my style would be the best idea,” noted Hailey. “Going into districts, I’m going to perform how I’ve always known. My goals for the rest of the season are to stay healthy and just perform to the best of my ability.”

Hailey also likes her relay team’s chances in the 400 relay.

“We have a really good chance at a gold medal,” said Hailey. “If we execute everything, I think we will be happy with the outcome.”

Hamaad believes he can continue to excel at districts.

“I feel I am running well, just not to my full potential,” he stated. “At this point of the season, I should be peaking, so I have to bring my all and put it all out every race.

He also is excited about his team’s possibilities in the 400 and 1600 relays.

“Our chances at districts are great in the relay,” added Jenkins. “We are already in a seeding where we are going to medal and we have run the state qualifying time many times for both races.

“We should be focused on beating out these teams ahead of us because we are here for all the competition. We aren’t scared to race anyone and want every single team to be at their best.”

Hamaad is determined for a good showing ahead and plans to stay focused.

“My chances are great,” beamed Hamaad. “Over these past years, there were too many excuses on my part instead of accepting defeat. I know with my technique and training, I can hang with and beat these guys head on. As long as I run my race. I should be in great shape to make big things happen.”

Head coach Kyle Rusnock expects both of them to excel.

“Hailey is having a phenomenal year,” beamed Rusnock. “She has been crushing her competition all year long. I think she was a little nervous knowing she was going after her fourth title. She has kept the spectators in awe when she is competing.

“Hamaad has been running great all year, and it paid off for him at leagues. He had a lot of competition in his events, and I love how he has embraced it as any elite athlete would. His times are insane this year, and this year he has a chance to make states.”
