Hurricanes get upset in EPC baseball playoffs

It was not the way Liberty wanted to start off their postseason.

The top-seeded Hurricanes were upset by Central Catholic in the opening round of the EPC tournament, falling to the Vikings 6-3 last week.

It was an early ouster from the league tourney for the ‘Canes (14-7), who played as one of the best teams in the regular season all year.

Unfortunately, mistakes will doom any team in the postseason, and head coach Andy Pitsilos and his group committed too many to overcome Central.

“We made too many mistakes to win that game,” said Pitsilos. “We gave up nine walks, committed two errors and three wild pitches. It was self-inflicted. The kids learned what they already know; the team with the least mistakes will usually win.”

Central only had two hits in the game, and Brogan Perrault allowed just one earned run on the mound for Liberty.

Now the Hurricanes will wait for next week’s District 11 6A tournament to begin and hope they can repeat their path towards a district title a year ago, after they failed to win the EPC championship, but came back to win districts.
