LHS aims for top spot

The East Penn Conference baseball tournament gets underway on Thursday, and Liberty is vying for the top seed as they head into the week.

The Hurricanes (13-5) still had a game with Freedom this week and the official seedings aren’t released until Wednesday, but Liberty is battling at the top with the likes of Whitehall (13-5), Parkland (12-6), Allen (14-4) and Pocono Mountain East (14-5) for positioning in the conference tournament.

Coming into the season with some questions on whether the ‘Canes could maintain their championship contention have all been dismissed, as Liberty keeps showing why they are the elite program in the District 11.

“Well, I am happy we came together,” said head coach Andy Pitsilos of his group. “It took a little bit of time, but the kids are playing well. Let’s see what happens the rest of the way.”

Pitsilos hopes that includes a spot in the EPC final. Liberty reached the league championship last season but fell to Parkland 7-5.

This year’s conference tournament could be a wide-open race with so many good teams in the conference, but the Hurricanes championship DNA will always help keep them in contention.

Freedom (10-9) clinched a district berth last week with a 4-3 win over Southern Lehigh on Saturday.

Andres Rivera Jr. had the go-ahead sac bunt in the sixth inning to help the Pates extend their season. Brian Renshaw went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Geovanny Ledee threw a complete game for the win, striking out four in the process.

Freedom is still in the hunt for the final spot in the conference tournament but will get official word when the seedings are released.
