Kids Williams likes to lead by example
Casey Williams knows baseball. And he should.
His baseball bloodlines run deep at Northampton.
Williams’ grandfather is legendary Konkrete Kids’ athletic director Mike Schneider, his uncle is Kids’ former high school and college standout Mike Schneider, and his uncle is former major leaguer Brian Schneider.
“Baseball runs in my blood,” beamed Williams. “I played as soon as I could hold a bat. Growing up around guys like my grandfather, I’ve been lucky to learn the game at a deeper level. That experience has really helped me understand what it takes, and I think it’s going to show in how I approach this season and help the team improve.”
Before this season, Williams took the extra steps to try and get the most of his senior season.
“I focused on getting my body right and being consistent in the weight room,” said Williams. “I really wanted to make sure I was at 100-percent before the start of the season. Also, continuing to lift during the season has helped me tremendously as I’ve struggled to do that in previous years.”
Williams got off to a hot start this season and mostly hits leadoff for the Kids. He’s also and overall team leader.
“As a leader, I focus on leading by example, staying positive and helping keep the team stay focused,” stressed Williams. “I want to contribute however I can, whether that’s on the field or supporting my teammates in the dugout. Hitting leadoff, my job is to set the tone, get things going for us, and put myself in scoring position so we can create opportunities early. I take a lot of pride in that.”
Manager Mick Sugra has been pleased with Williams’ role in the top spot.
“He’s our leadoff guy, and he sets the tone for us,” said Sugra last month. “He has had some two-hit days for us, and he’s leading in nearly all offensive stats. He has really set our offense up, and he’s seeing the ball well right now.”
Besides himself, Williams likes the bond among his teammates. The team will now head into the EPC and District 11 playoffs.
“This team has great chemistry,” beamed Williams. “We’re a really close group of guys, and that shows on and off the field. Everyone trusts each other and plays for one another, which makes us stronger as a team. That connection gives us a lot of confidence and trust in one another.
A fast start helped their pace as the playoffs loom.
“We have a strong group of guys and we’re really close as a team, which makes a big difference. Everyone’s been working hard, and if we stay consistent and play together, I think we can compete with anyone and make a deep run this season,” he said.
