Trivia contest and a PA Dutch supporter unite church and community at Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church
An enthusiastic crowd of church members and community supporters gathered at Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church, 3441 Devonshire Road, April 19, for a trivia and pop culture contest followed by an old-fashioned Pennsylvania Dutch supper.
The trivia portion of the gathering was hosted by John Hartzog, who goes by the nickname of “Doc Zog.”
Hartzog is a former East Penn School District teacher who has been hosting community trivia and pop culture events for organizations across the Lehigh Valley since 1974.
Trivia fans were divided into teams according to tables where they were seated. Trivia and pop culture questions dealing with events that occurred mostly in the 1950s and 1960s were answered by the participants and scored competitively.
“Our attendees really got into the competition and the rivalry between teams was intense. It embodied the good-natured fun that goes with remembering our younger years,” Joshua Fink said.
Fink is a well-known Lehigh Valley historian and is chairperson of the church’s history committee. The church, which dates back to Colonial America, has long been considered a vital part of Salisbury Township’s historical legacy.
After the entertainment provided by the trivia contest, attendees were able to chose from a fulsome buffet featuring a variety of Pennsylvania Dutch favorite dishes.
Among the most sought after buffet items were chicken potpie, chow chow relish and cottage cheese covered with apple butter. For dessert, homemade shoofly pie was a favorite.
“During our country’s 250th anniversary year it is particularly relevant that we look to our past and remember the times and culture that formed us,” Fink observed.
