Fighting Hunger: Take time to slow down, live in moment, have conversations

Whitehall-Coplay Hunger Initiative is blessed to have wonderful volunteers, community partners and food and monetary donations from several different sources. We also acknowledge the many grant approvals received from the Lehigh County commissioners, Trexler Trust and the Diocese of Allentown.

We could never feed as many people as we do without all of you!

WCHI’s mission is to alleviate food insecurity in Whitehall and Coplay. The WCHI provides monthly food to low-income Whitehall-Coplay School District residents. We distribute food 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4:30-7 p.m. the second and third Thursdays of the month. An appointment is required to attend our distributions.

If you or someone you know needs food, call 610-442-1355 for more information.

In March 2026, WCHI fed 318 households, consisting of 430 children, 528 adults and 239 seniors, for a total of 1,197 people. This is 11% lower than March 2025 when WCHI fed 344 households, consisting of 474 children, 617 adults and 250 seniors, for a total of 1,341 people.

March 2025 was the highest amount of people WCHI has served since opening the pantry. The April 2026 attendance numbers were not available when this article was submitted.

WCHI needs the following food items: canned fruit packed in natural juices or low sugar, low-salt canned diced tomatoes, low-sugar cereal and oatmeal and low-salt chicken noodle soup. These items can be delivered and placed on the right side in the foyer at Re/Max Unlimited, 1080 Schadt Ave., Whitehall, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. We thank you in advance for your continued support.

Each one of us, in our own way, has helped and touched someone in our community, and the community has also touched us. What we say or do can have a huge impact on someone’s life and may be remembered years later.

I talked with a friend who recently visited her elderly father in the hospital. They talked of memories they shared over the years. Her dad mentioned things they did together when she was a small child.

A couple days later, she visited him again, and he could not remember any of the things they discussed a few days earlier, and he really did not recognize her. He then remembered a different event they shared that she had forgotten. That conversation made her day.

My friend said to live in the current moment. Today, people have such busy lives, so just take five minutes to talk to someone. You never know how you can change someone’s life for the better or how they can change yours. You may smile that day. Or years later, you can remember something that touched your life, and that memory should put a smile on your face in that future moment.

Have a wonderful week, and smile!
