SHS softball hands Palmerton first loss

If the players on the 2026 Salisbury softball team remember nothing else about this season, they will remember beating the last remaining undefeated team in District 11.

Palmerton was dancing its way through the season until the Falcons grounded the Bombers with a 7-2 win at Palmerton.

Coming into the game with an 11-0 record, Palmerton was trailing from the first inning on against Salisbury.

Sophomore Gianna Olds lined a double to center field and Tessa Kemmerer followed that with a walk. Both runners moved up during Julia Carney’s at-bat thanks to a wild pitch and then a single to right brought both of them home for a 2-0 lead.

The Bombers got to starter Jenna Swoyer for a run in the bottom of the inning but stranded a runner on base. The junior pitcher went all seven innings and allowed two runs, but only the first-inning run was earned.

Palmerton added another run in the bottom of the fifth on two singles and an error that made that run unearned.

Swoyer didn’t record any strikeouts, but her fielders were able to come up with plays when they needed them.

Palmerton made just one error in the game, but Salisbury jumped on it to start a three-run second inning.

Brinlee Neitz started the inning when she reached on an error and Leilanna Negron moved her to second when she singled to right.

The Falcons were in a mood to keep adding on and Sophia Gunning and Olds delivered with back-to-back doubles that made it 5-1 in favor of Salisbury.

The Blue Bombers put runners in scoring position in the second and third innings but came up empty both times.

In the Salisbury half of the fourth inning, the doubles kept coming as Kemmerer doubled home Gunning, who had singled. Some good baserunning allowed Kemmerer to move up to third and a fly ball from Carney allowed her to cross the plate for a 7-1 lead.

After Palmerton’s unearned run in the fifth, Swoyer gave up a walk in the sixth and then put the Bombers down in order in the bottom of the seventh to get the 7-2 win.

It was the first Colonial League regular season loss for Palmerton since last May when it lost to Northern Lehigh 13-8.

Salisbury did suffer a setback this past week when it faced Bangor, the hottest team in the league. The Slaters had seven straight wins and made it eight straight with an 8-0 win against Salisbury.

The Falcons refused to let it pull them down and they took out some frustrations against a nonleague opponent in the Allen Canaries.

Swoyer definitely took out some frustrations from the circle. After going without a strikeout in the win against Palmerton, she gave her fielders a little time off as she collected 11 strikeouts in a 16-2 win over Allen.

Swoyer allowed just one hit in the game that was shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

Salisbury scattered 12 hits among 10 hitters in the lineup with Carney and Swoyer collecting two each. Eight different players scored runs in the game with Olds getting four. Carney crossing the plate three times and Gunning, Kemmerer, and Swoyer all scoring twice.

The Falcons need three wins in their remaining seven games to qualify for the District 11 playoffs. Perhaps another game that will help to define their season comes up on Saturday when they play at Saucon Valley.

The Panthers and Falcons are tied for the final Colonial League playoff spot with 4-5 league records. Saucon Valley won the first meeting, so dropping this one would make it difficult for Salisbury to reach the league playoffs.
