PHS boys tennis team goes 18-0
The Parkland boys tennis team beat Emmaus Monday to cap an unbeaten regular season.
The Trojans went 18-0 overall and 15-0 in league matches to earn this year’s East Penn Conference regular season title. They will also be the top seed in the District 11 team tournament next month.
In Monday’s 6-1 win over Emmaus, Derek Yao won the No. 1 singles match by forfeit and Manav Patel earned the Trojans a point at the No. 2 singles position.
Parkland swept the doubles matches in straight sets.
Ryan Shan and Madhav Shamra won the No. 1 doubles match 6-3, 6-2. Doyoon Kim and Tyson Noto rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Noah Elijovich and Pranav Senthilkumar took the third doubles match 6-1, 6-2. And Matt Huang and Ajay Gade shut out their Hornet opponents 6-0, 6-0.
Parkland earned a pair of wins on Saturday as it beat Pocono Mountain East and Pocono Mountain West by 6-0 scores.
Yao, Patel and Jacky Zhang won singles matches against the Cardinals. Kim/Noto, Elijovich/Huang and Senthilkumar/Gade were winning doubles pairings against PME.
Against PM West, Yao, Patel and Madhav Sharma won singles matches. Doubles winners against the Panthers were Kim/Noto, Elijovich/Senthilkumar and Huang/Gade.
In other recent matches, Parkland beat Nazareth 6-0 last Wednesday with Yao, Patel and Zhang winning singles matches and Kim/Noto, Elijovich/Senthilkumar and Huang/Gade taking the three doubles matches all by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Parkland beat Stroudsburg 6-0 on Tuesday, April 7 with the same line up.
The Trojans won 15 of their 18 matches via shut out this season. The only teams that avoided sweeps were Liberty in a 4-2 loss on March 13, Central Catholic in a 4-1 PHS victory on April 1 and Emmaus on Monday.
The EPC champs will move on to Thursday’s league championship tournament. Next week the District 11 singles tournament gets underway, with the doubles tournament a week later and team districts slated for the first week in May.
Seeds for the District 11 singles championships were released Tuesday with all three Trojan singles players qualifying for the tournament.
Defending district champ Yao is the top seed with an opening-round match against Freedom’s Logan Ritter next Monday at Freedom. Patel is seeded fourth and will take on Freedom’s Oscar Avila in the first round. Zhang is unseeded with a first-round matchup against No. 6 seed Luke D’Angelo (Liberty).
The first two rounds of district singles are scheduled for Monday at Freedom. The semifinals and finals are slated to be played Wednesday, April 22 at Freedom.
