Hornets beat Liberty, ES South

Before breaking for the Easter holiday, the Emmaus High School softball team was triumphant in both of its games last week.

The Hornets beat Liberty 4-0 last Tuesday, March 31, and took down East Stroudsburg South 10-1 this past Saturday afternoon.

In the win over the Hurricanes, Emmaus got off to a strong start early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Hornets added one in the third and one in the fifth to secure the victory. They finished with 10 hits, led by two apiece from Mari Eiswerth and Abigail Derr, with both adding two RBIs.

Caylie Granitz, Haliegh Gigliotti, Julia DeFanti, Sydney Bennett, Brianna Gitski and Morgan Schwab all had with one hit. Eiswerth threw a complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out nine.

In the victory against the Cavaliers, Emmaus scored twice in the first, five times in the third and three in the fifth, compiling 11 hits. Julia Murphy-Peterson led the lineup with three hits and scored two runs. Both DeFanti and Eiswerth tallied two hits.

Derr recorded a hit and three RBIs, while Autumn Tarbox had a hit and two RBIs. Granitz and Schwab rounded out the hitting with a hit each. Eiswerth allowed just two hits and an unearned run, striking out eight batters in a complete-game victory.

Emmaus, which improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference, has a busy week with five games in six days this week, including a meeting between two of the top teams in the league Wednesday at Stroudsburg. The Mountaineers were 5-1 overall and 5-0 in league play heading into this week.

Emmaus also takes on Parkland (2-4, 2-3) Friday afternoon in Orefield.
