Hornet softball remains on top of EPC standings

The Emmaus High School softball team won both of its Eastern Pennsylvania Conference games last week to remain undefeated in league play.

The Hornets defeated Pocono Mountain East 4-3 last Tuesday, April 14, and then took down Bethlehem Catholic 16-0 in three innings on Thursday.

In the win over the Cardinals, Emmaus trailed 3-0 in the sixth and 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning before rallying.

Morgan Schwab’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning plated pinch runner Marissa Gigliotti with the game-winning run. The Hornets tied the game as Mari Eiswerth delivered an RBI double a batter before Schwab’s winner. Eiswerth and Taylor Hauver both went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Inside the circle, Eiswerth threw a complete game and struck out 15 batters, allowing just four hits. Schwab, Sydney Bennett, Haleigh Gigliotti and Autumn Tarbox had a hit.

In the victory against the Golden Hawks, Calise Eiswerth threw all three innings and gave up just one hit while striking out six. She also hit a home run and led the lineup with two hits and five RBIs. Schwab also connected on a home run.

Hauver, Gitski and Schwab all had a hit and an RBI. Tarbox and Julia Murphy-Peterson both recorded a hit and scored a run, and Julia DeFanti had one hit, two RBIs and scored two runs.

Emmaus improved to 11-3 overall and 10-0 in the conference.

The Hornets are the last remaining unbeaten team in the EPC, with a two-game lead over Whitehall (9-4 overall, 8-2 EPC) in the Lehigh Division.

In the Northampton Division, Freedom (9-2, 9-1) and Northampton (10-3, 9-1) are tied for first place, while Stroudsburg (8-3, 8-2) leads the Pocono Division.

Emmaus entered the week with six league games remaining on the schedule, including two against Whitehall (April 20 and 30).
