EPC final loss fueled Trojan boys basketball run
When the Parkland High School boys basketball team lost to Northampton in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship in mid-February, it was a tough pill to swallow for the Trojans.
Not only did they just miss a chance at getting back to winning EPC gold, but the defeat snapped a 10-game win streak, as Parkland was playing its best basketball when it mattered most at the end of the season.
The Trojans regrouped and won their next five games, including their fifth consecutive District 11 title and then two games in the state playoffs.
Parkland finished with a 24-7 overall record and 15-1 mark in the conference.
“That night after the Northampton game was tough for the guys and us as a program,” said head coach Eddie Ohlson. “We didn’t play our best when we had been for a couple weeks prior, and we needed to be better in that game. But I give the guys credit, they really learned from that night and used it as motivation going forward and we went on a nice little run there into states.”
The Trojans were led in scoring all season by junior Blake Nassry, who averaged 15.7 points per game. Senior Tyler Beck averaged 10 ppg and classmate Jude Ruisch averaged 8.6 ppg. Senior Nassim Adams was not far behind at 5.8 ppg.
Parkland will graduate eight seniors, including Beck, Ruisch, Adams, Alex Barrera Lamar Bonner, Bear Jacobs, Ryan Kearney and Javian Porter. This group made their mark on the program with four district titles, a conference crown and multiple wins in the state tournament over the last four seasons.
“The seniors will always be remembered for their success here,” Ohlson said. “But even more so, they’re a great group of kids that were easy to coach and always wanted to learn and get better. They were a very close group.”
The Trojans should be contenders for EPC and District 11 next season. They will be led by Nassry and classmates TJ Lawrence and Tyler Brunnabend.
