Wilson walks off Catty
After Catasauqua tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, Shaun Danielson’s bases-loaded single gave Wilson an 8-7 win over the Rough Riders Friday at Wilson.
Catasauqua jumped out to a 6-2 lead. However, the Warriors scored the next five runs to take a 7-6 lead into the seventh inning.
Reece Lopez led off the top of the seventh with a walk, then stole second before moving to third on a ground out by Luis Colazzo. With two out, Lopez scored on a passed ball, beating the throw to tie the game at 7.
Wilson drew three-straight walks in the bottom of the seventh to load the bases off of Rough Rider pitchers Gavin Hacker and Joey Conway, setting the stage for Danielson’s walk-off single, scoring courtesy runner Owen Miller.
“We just couldn’t quite pull it out,” said Steve Bradley, Catasauqua manager. “We have got to learn how to stay on top. I want us to be go-getters and takers and have a little more grit when it comes down to getting those outs that we need and getting those runs across that we need in tight games. I think we can do that.”
The Rough Riders used aggressive base running to jump out to the early lead.
Asael Gonzalez and Cody Roth both singled in the top of the first inning. Stolen bases got Gonzalez to third and Roth to second. A Collazo sacrifice fly scored Gonzalez and Roth scored when Wilson could not handle a ground ball from Trever Hartzell to make it 2-0.
Catasauqua extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the second when Gonzalez and Roth both reached on errors, then scored on a two-run double from Conway.
“We did everything right,” Bradley said of the early innings. “Then, we just lacked base runners. I thought their pitchers did a good job. Their lefty was good. He was the first lefty we saw this year and I thought we hit him well early. Then, we just went to sleep for a while. You can’t do that. You have to keep putting pressure on teams.”
Wilson got two runs back in the bottom of the second. Charles Fredericks doubled and scored on a single from Nolan Browne, who then scored on a Bryce Meck single to make it 4-2, Catasauqua.
The Rough Riders got those runs right back in the third. Hartzell singled with one out. Then two batters later, Reese Savercool walked and singles from Evan Reed and Gonzalez brought in runs to extend the lead to 6-2.
The Warriors added one run in the third when Braden Benevides singled and scored on Fredericks’ single. In the fourth, Wilson scored twice on Danielson’s two-run single, scoring Landon Gary and Ryan Bonham.
Wilson tied it at six in the fifth when Fredericks singled and scored on a Meck fielder’s choice. The Warriors took their first lead at 7-6 in the sixth when Wyatt Deemer walked and scored on a Browne single, setting the stage for the seventh inning.
Reese Savercool started for Catasauqua on the mound, pitching 4-plus innings, allowing six runs and striking out three. Hacker pitched 1-plus innings, allowing two runs. Conway faced the final three hitters.
Danielson pitched six innings for Wilson, allowing six runs and striking out eight. Fredericks allowed one run in his one inning of relief for the Warriors.
The loss dropped the Rough Riders to 6-6 on the season heading into this week’s games.
“We’ll get back to practice and work on it,” Bradley said. “We’ll learn from it, move on, and hopefully we can turn things around.”
Catasauqua is scheduled to host Moravian Academy today. They were slated to host Northern Lehigh on Tuesday. No score on Tuesday’s game was available as of press time.
