LHS falls on tough times
It was a tough week of action for Liberty’s girls lacrosse team.
The Hurricanes suffered a three-game skid in last week’s results, pushing them below .500 to 6-7 overall.
Liberty lost to Emmaus 10-9, Southern Lehigh 15-8 and finally to Freedom 14-7 over the weekend to make things worse.
Head coach Sam Rella was still upbeat about the team despite their toughest week of the season.
“This week has been a tough one,” said Rella. “We’ve faced three strong opponents in Emmaus, Southern Lehigh and Freedom. Our game against Emmaus was incredibly exciting. We battled back from a four-goal deficit in the first quarter and stayed with them the entire game.
We started a bit slow against Southern Lehigh, but the third quarter is where things really shifted, and we began playing more as a unit. Southern Lehigh brought a lot of speed, and we had to adjust to that.”
Against Freedom, things went the way of the Pates, as Karee Vandever had five goals and three assists and Saige Carter added four goals to help push Freedom to 7-4 on the season.
While the results weren’t what Rella and company wanted, she took things away from the process that can hopefully turn things around this week with matchups against Saucon Valley and Parkland.
“This week has taught us to take some time off the clock, gain possession off the draw, and take care of the ball,” said Rella. “Working as a team, staying positive, pushing through the heat, and never giving up is something we look forward to continuing for the rest of our matchups and hopefully making district playoffs for the first time in program history as well.”
Meanwhile, Freedom enjoyed the opposite end of the spectrum last week, winning all three of their matchups to put them in great position to clinch a district berth with five games left in the regular season.
The Pates defeated Easton 23-14, Northampton 14-1 and then capped it off with the win over Liberty.
They have three games this week against Northwestern, Pleasant Valley and Saucon Valley where they should be able to wrap up a postseason berth with one win.
