Conway helping to pace Roughie baseball team
In his second season, Catasauqua’s Joey Conway apparently has found his niche for the Rough Riders.
Through his first nine games, which is the time of this writing, Conway has been an integral part of the Rough Riders’ success, as they posted an overall 5-4 record after winning just three games last season.
In a recent 8-0 victory over Palisades, Conway had two hits and drove in a run.
After that game, Conway raised his batting average to a team-leading .464, and he also led the team in hits (13), singles (11) tied for the lead in runs (8). On the mound, Conway has been used sparingly, but he will be a major part of the staff.
Conway is enjoying the moments.
“The season has been going pretty well,” stressed the sophomore. “I feel like I’ve settled in and started to find some consistency. There’s always room to get better, but overall I’m happy with where I’m at and how the team’s been competing.”
He isn’t totally surprised with his early numbers.
“I’m seeing it pretty well right now,” said Conway. “I’ve been trying to stay patient, pick the right pitches, and not chase too much. When I stick to that approach, good things happen.”
For Conway, it was just a matter of confidence coming back into the fold. Last season, Conway began the year with a 0-24 slump, and he didn’t have a hit until the 13th game of the season. He ended last year with 11 hits and a .256 average.
“Definitely,” he confirmed. “Having another year of experience makes a huge difference. I understand my approach better, and I’ve learned how to adjust quicker when things aren’t going perfectly.”
Conway figures to get his share of work pitching this season, and he cited Ty Rothdeutsch, his hitting and pitching coach, as a major reason for his success.
“Yeah, I spent some time developing myself with him,” said Conway. “He has helped me in both my physical and mental game.”
Head coach Steve Bradley has appreciated Conway’s ascent and his grittiness.
“Joey has been fantastic for us,” beamed Bradley. “He’s attacked the plate with aggressive confidence. I love to see it. And he plays a great first base. He just played two games with the flu, so he’s tough too.”
Conway understands his role on the team.
“I see myself as someone who can contribute consistently and bring energy every day,” said Conway. “I want to do whatever helps us win.”
Conway believes his team will continue to turn the corner.
“That has been huge,” beamed Conway. “Getting those wins gave everyone confidence and changed our momentum. It feels like we’re starting to click as a group, and that’s when baseball gets fun.”
