Performances set for ‘Little Women’

Players of the Stage, a nonprofit Christian youth theater group, will present “Little Women” April 24 and 25 and May 1 and 2.

“Little Women,” based on a novel of the same name written by Louisa May Alcott, was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869.

The play follows the March sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy — as they navigate childhood to womanhood in Concord, Mass., while their father is serving as a chaplain in the Civil War.

Production staff includes Amber Cade as director and Andrew Stirling MacDonald as assistant director. Cade said the play has some musical elements, and the adaptation is by playwright Kate Hamill.

“Jo March finds herself in a world that is changing on every level — a country that is tearing itself apart, a father who heroically leaves to fight injustice and a family left behind that is struggling to navigate life’s challenges,” Cade said. “Her desperation to keep things the same stems from her fear of her own uncertain future. Her feeling of displacement in society is a feeling that drives her in her conflicts and resolutions as she struggles to love well in a way that she is made to love. Her sisters battle their own struggles as they fight for what they want: security, peace and love.”

Cade added many of these desires call for sacrifice, and the girls must decide if the sacrifices are worth it.

Cast members include Julia Daniel as Jo March; Grace Flyte as Meg March; Genevieve Crerand as Beth March; Jacquelean Dressler as Amy March; Thea Lex as Marmee March; Victor Ramos as Laurie; John Morgan as John Brooks/Mr. Dashwood; Althea Vitaro as Aunt March; Brinley Barnhart as Hannah; Eli Sampson as Mr. Laurence/Robert March/Parrot; Avery Vaughn as Mrs. Mingott; and Christina Ramos as Messenger/Doctor.

Understudies include Jenna Dobrowolski for Jo; Rylie Yetter for Meg; Maddy Trauger for Beth; Kierra Haklar for Amy; Sawyer Scheirer for Marmee March; Robbie Vaughn for Laurie; Owen Dobrowolski for John Brooks/Mr. Dashwood; Ava Kramer for Aunt March/Hannah; Stephen Smith for Mr. Laurence/Robert March/Parrot; and Samantha Young for Mrs. Mingott.

“Little Women” will be performed 7 p.m. April 24 and 25 and then May 1 and 2 at Citylight Bible Church, 1921 Union Blvd., Allentown.

Cade said in lieu of an admission fee, a freewill offering will be taken to benefit Bloom for Women.

“It is an organization near to POTS’ heart as we have supported them many times in the past,” Cade said. “With the current climate of the world and the growing awareness of sex trafficking and exploitation, I wanted to choose an organization that sought to fight and right these injustices.”

According to Bloom for Women’s website, “Bloom offers sanctuary and a continuum of care to heal, empower and employ survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. As a faith-based nonprofit, Bloom empowers survivors to heal and create a new future through its emergency response, its two-year residential program, pregnant and parenting survivor services and its independent living housing.”

Cade said it is an honor to support the organization.

She added this year is the 25th year of Players of the Stage serving the community of the Lehigh Valley.

“We are blessed to have such an incredible community to pour our services into and provide a place where families can find and foster a love for the theatrical arts,” Cade said. “We invite you to come see this show and partner with us in making the Lehigh Valley a stronger community.”

Reservations are required for all performances.
