Garry Hunsicker will be presenting on the past and present of farming 7 p.m. April 29 at the Helfrich Springs Grist Mill, 501 Mickley Road, Whitehall. He will share his knowledge and experience about how farming has transformed over the years.
His presentation will detail that the fertile soil is what initially attracted immigrants to the area of Whitehall Township and beyond. You can say it was the first major “industry” of the 18th and 19th centuries. Later, as discoveries were being made, farms were being sold for their use of mineral contents within the soil to be utilized in making iron followed by the manufacturing of cement.
Hunsicker is a third-generation farmer of the 250-acre Twin Maple Farms in East Allen Township.
