Sugra, Kids feel good about season

Even if it is his final season, Northampton’s Aidan Sugra is taking the upcoming season in stride.

“I see this season as another opportunity to play a sport I love with my teammates,” stressed Sugra. “We’ve worked hard in the offseason and have gotten closer as a team.”

As a senior, Sugra solely understands his role ahead. Over the past three years, Sugra has grown as a player.

“I just see my role to be someone for some of the younger guys to look up to and feel encouraged by to do their best, as well as trying to keep the team connected,” said the shortstop. “I feel very comfortable with this team we have and think if we communicate well and have good chemistry.”

Last season, Sugra hit .283 and led the team in RBIs (15) and slugging percentage (.547). He had 15 hits, 11 runs, four doubles, two triples, and four stolen bases.

This season, Sugra has worked on parts of his game.

“On outside practices, I have made sure to work on my footwork and glove work,” said Sugra. “I also am getting more power in my swing.”

Head coach Mick Sugra will count on his son and fellow senior pitcher Brady Simock for their experience and leadership this spring.

“Aidan and Brady have to be two guys that set the tone for us this year offensively and in the field,” said the skipper. “Brady on the mound has to get guys out and be able to go deep into games. We need depth out of him on the mound.

“Aidan led us in RBIs, extra base hits and slugging leader last year. We need similar numbers or better from him again this year as well as other guys to step up also at the plate and on the mound.”

The younger Sugra and his teammates have put behind last year’s season that saw them finish with an overall 8-12 record and miss the district playoffs for the first time in 15 years.

They are confident and looking for a fresh start when they open the season against Dieruff Thursday.

“We can be a great team,” boasted the younger Sugra. “We’ve put last year behind us and are only focusing on the new season ahead.”
