FHS looks for improvement

It’s been tough sledding for the boys’ lacrosse teams in the city, but Freedom has been trying to stay afloat in the landscape.

The Pates are 3-5 on the year and head coach RJ Guffy knows his group has been battling through the midway point of the season.

“We definitely didn’t start the season like we wanted to,” said Guffy. “Battled some injuries early on and dropped a few close games. We are challenging ourselves to play a complete four quarters of lacrosse.”

Freedom dropped contests to Moravian 14-7 and Pop John XXIII 19-8 last week and now have a week with four games on tap against Phillipsburg, Easton, Northampton and Scranton Prep this week in what could be a make or break week for the group’s playoff aspirations.

Guffy knows they need to improve in certain areas in order to close the gap against opponents.

“We’re looking to limit mistakes and capitalize on mistakes made by the opponent,” he said. “I feel like from the first week of March to now we have made big gains in our development. The guys have a drive to keep getting better everyday. Our experienced guys took the younger guys in and really are doing a great job helping develop them. We rely on a few freshmen, so it’s good they have each other’s backs.

Liberty (1-10) and Bethlehem Catholic (0-7) haven’t enjoyed much success this season, as the Hurricanes are looking to snap an eight-game losing streak this week when they take on Southern Lehigh (4-4) in their only matchup.

The Hawks have Northampton (5-6) and Northwestern (5-3) on their agenda.
