Salisbury High School continues to offer students a wide range of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. From college preparation programs and summer experiences to community service projects and schoolwide events, Salisbury is always busy supporting its hardworking students.
The guidance counselors have recently been sharing new and recurring opportunities. One recent opportunity included a visit from a representative from Kutztown University. The representative visited SHS Feb. 18, during Falcon Period and explained the university’s Early College Academy Program to juniors. Students interested in getting a head start on their college journey can explore the Early College Academy for education or exploratory studies to better understand how the program works.
Another college-related opportunity is available for students interested in expanding their academic experiences this summer. Students can consider a residential program at Lehigh University. The one-week program, July 12-17, is open to students in grades 10 through 12. Participants will stay in residence halls, eat in dining halls and learn directly from Lehigh faculty.
Students can choose from four academic topics: Blockchain in Business, Engineering: Race Cars & Sensors, Journalism and Sustainability. There is a cost per person, offering a unique precollege experience on a university campus.
In addition to the academic opportunities shared, students looking for summer employment can apply to become part-time or seasonal playground counselors for Salisbury Township’s summer playground program. The program runs mid-June through late July, 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, along with Wednesday evening sessions 6:30-8 p.m. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and have their own transportation. Applications are available at the Salisbury Township Municipal Building and the deadline to apply is April 1. The position of camp counselor offers students valuable work experience while serving the local community. Any questions about these opportunities can be answered through the emails that were sent or by contacting the guidance office through Salisbury’s website.
Community involvement continues to be a strong focus at Salisbury. National Honor Society hosted family game night Feb. 12 in the high school cafeteria, bringing students and families together for an evening of games, trivia and snacks.
The Scholastic Scrimmage team offered a fun trivia challenge and attendees enjoyed both school-provided games and personal favorites brought from home. Events like these strengthen school spirit and encourage community involvement.
Service organizations are also making a meaningful impact. Key Club members volunteered at Salisbury Elementary School’s second annual Sweetheart Splendor Dance Feb. 21. Volunteers assisted with serving food, as well as helping with crafts and games, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere for younger students and their families. Opportunities like this allow high school students to give back while building leadership and teamwork skills.
SHS’s Painting Hearts Club is working on one of its first major projects by creating handmade cards for adopters at the Lehigh Valley Humane Society. The goal of the project is to spread positivity to families welcoming new pets into their homes. This project highlights the school’s commitment to kindness and community outreach.
Music supporters can also get involved by participating in a fundraiser at the Susquehanna Diner, 1701 E. Susquehanna St., Allentown, 2-9 p.m. March 5. The fundraiser supports the Salisbury Music Association, which helps fund the marching band and in-school music programs at all levels. Community participation directly benefits student musicians and strengthens arts programs within the district.
With college visits, summer programs, job opportunities, fundraisers and service projects, SHS continues to provide meaningful experiences for its students.
Falcons are preparing for their futures, supporting their community and making the most of every opportunity offered throughout the school year.
