NHS cheerleaders earn silver medals
Northampton’s Konkrete Kids were silver medalists in the Class 3A Small Division of the District XI Competitive Spirit Cheerleading Championships on Jan. 3 at Easton Area Middle School.
“My legs were shaking a little bit, but overall, I’m happy with everything,” said senior captain Chloe Kunsman. “Even though it wasn’t first (place), I got a medal, and that’s all I wanted.”
Northampton’s overall score was 86.8 with no deductions.
“We needed to up our execution score and focus less on the difficulty of the stunts,” said Northampton coach Mia Guadagnino. “Our goal today was to hit a clean, solid routine, and we knew that was gonna get us our bid to states no matter what place we got today.”
Northampton’s squad includes 15 cheerleaders and four alternate cheerleaders.
“I think the crowd was the loudest I’d ever heard them, and the actual routine itself, I’ve never been more confident,” said senior captain Gabrielle Rothrock. “I’m proudest of the single base full-up. There’s one girl under it, and she spins the flyer by herself.”
After a sixth place finish in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Championships, Coach Guadagnino made a change to the routine.
“Yesterday morning at practice, we decided to take one of our stunt sections out and replace it with some more pyramid skills that we know these girls are super confident in, and I think it was an amazing decision to make that little change today,” she said.
The Konkrete Kids received the second highest score in building with a 32.2.
“In our past couple of competitions, the nerves got to them, but today, they got it together, and there wasn’t a second on that mat when I didn’t see them fighting for their skills,” Guadagnino said. “Because there’s seven total teams in our division, you never know if you’re not gonna be called there, so I was so happy to hear our name called second.
“I also cheered for Northampton, and I remember being so, so nervous before we went on, but nothing compares to the nerves you have when you know it’s totally out of your hands and totally up to them. They had such a great warm-up today and great practices all week. I felt super confident in all their stunts today.”
Easton placed first with a score of 92.2, Freedom came in third with a score of 79.7, and Whitehall was fourth with a score of 75.7.
All four squads will advance to the PIAA State Championships this weekend in Johnstown, Pa.
