Salisbury girls basketball makes statement in loss to Lehighton

With a roster of just eight players, some of whom have little or no varsity experience, this basketball season could have pretty rough for Salisbury.

Instead, the team opened with three wins in a row but may have saved its best performance for game number four, which it lost.

The Falcons hosted Lehighton, which also opened the season with three straight wins and is projected as one the top teams in the Colonial League.

Salisbury held the Indians to their lowest point total of the season while nearly matching the most points they had allowed in their three wins.

Lehighton won 41-37 to move to 4-0 and drop Salisbury to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in league games. Kendra Morgan scored 16 points to lead the Falcons with junior Tessa Kemmerer scoring a season-high six points and freshman Izabella Gonzalez scoring nine points, the most in her varsity career.

Lehighton had averaged 50 points per game and allowed an average of just under 31 points per game to its opponents coming into the contest at Salisbury High School.

Earlier in the week, Salisbury took a road trip to Jim Thorpe and downed the Olympians 46-25. Morgan had 16 points in that win with Roxana Cardenas scoring eight points and Bella Nimeh setting her season high with seven points in the win.

Morgan is averaging 18.5 points per game this season with Cardenas at 9.5 per game.

Salisbury is home for a pair of games this week. The Falcons host Northern Lehigh Wednesday and then play against Moravian Academy Friday.

Moravian Academy has struggled this season and has not scored more than 17 points in a game this year and gives up an average of 48 points per game. Northern Lehigh opened its schedule with three losses but have won two of their last three games and are 2-4 both overall and in the Colonial League.
