During the Whitehall-Coplay School Board Nov. 10 meeting, the board was given a look at six new high-school courses that will be available for the 2026-27 school year. They include the following.
• Financial Literacy (grade 10): This course will teach students about income, budgeting, saving and investing, insurance and other financial skills for their future.
• Heritage Spanish 2 (grades 9-12): This course is designed for heritage speakers who want to continue building advanced Spanish language skills and better meet diverse learner needs.
• Intro to Foods (grades 9-12) and The Art and Science of Cooking (grades 10-12): This two-course sequence teaches students basic culinary skills and then advances them to a course that teaches American and international cuisine.
• Digital Content Creation (grades 10-12): This class is replacing Digital Arts. Students will learn how to plan, shoot, edit and design digital content together.
• Introduction to Cybersecurity (grades 9-12): This course will teach students the basics of programming and cybersecurity. The goal is to help students understand the digital world and protect against online threats.
• Honors Concert Band, Honors Concert Band Split, Honors Concert Choir Split and Honors Concert Choir (grade 12): These performance-based courses will run consecutively. It’s a way to recognize students’ commitment to the performing arts over their four years of high school. An audition and teacher recommendation are required.
Students can begin selecting their schedules in February 2026.
Also at the meeting, a presentation on K-12 data was given. This data highlights students’ academic growth and areas where they may need additional help. The goal is to grow a strong data culture, using test score trends, such as PSSAs and Keystones, to help guide decisions about programs and resources the students may need.
In other school news, district administration announced they are continuing to work on an agreement with PPL to host the 2026 graduation ceremony. The board’s solicitor is reviewing adjustments, and the goal is to have the agreement ready for approval at the next meeting.
