Classical View: Of “Frost and Falling Light” for Bel Canto Youth concert

“The concert title, ‘Frost and Falling Light,’ comes from our performance selections of Randall Thompson’s ‘Frostiana,’ which incorporates the poetry of Robert Frost and ‘falling light’ refers to the recent time change where it’s getting darker a lot earlier,” says Kelly Rocchi, Chorus Director, Bel Canto Youth Chorus of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem.

Bel Canto Youth Chorus of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem presented “Winter Concert: Frost and Falling Light,” 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Nov. 23, Wesley United Methodist Church, Bethlehem.

The concert opens with “In All a Winter’s Bliss,’ a four-part harmony round composed by Bel Canto member Andrew Schucker, age 14.

“Andrew composed this piece last spring as part of our spring workshop composition series. He was one of several of our students who worked with Dr. Larry Lipkis, Moravian University Composer-in-Residence and Professor of Music,” says Alaina Swartz, Youth Chorale Conductor.

Presented only at the 2 p.m. concert is “Autumn Canon” by Lajos Bardos (1899-1986) by the Bach Buddies, conducted by Margaret Surdovel.

The Bach Buddies, for children kindergarten through second grade, is a recent addition to the Bel Canto program.

The Da Capo Treble Choir, directed by Erica Silver, performs the Paul Carey arrangement of “The Star,” which includes “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and Victoria Ebel-Sabo’s “Winter Wind.”

Alaina Swarz leads the Youth Chorale in “Blow, Blow, thou Winter Wind” by Jennifer Lucy Cook; Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Wir eilen mit schwachen, doch emsigen Schritten” from “Cantata No. 78”; “Circle Around the Moon” by Mark Hierholzer, and Audrey Snyder’s arrangement of “Jingle Bells.”

Kelly Rocchi conducts the Concert Choir in Orlando Gibbon’s “Hosanna to the Song ot David”; Randall Thompson’s “A Girl’s Garden” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” and Dr. Diane L. White’s “Clap Praise.”

Rocchi also conducts the Youth Chorus in “Moonlight on Snow” by Richard E. McKee and Jacob Runestad’s “Your Soul Is Song” from “Weathering the Storms of Life.”

“Moravians are German-speaking settlers from the Saxony area of Germany who settled in the Lehigh Valley, founding Nazareth in 1740 and Bethlehem in 1741,” says Kyle Johnston, Associate Director, Moravian Music Foundation, adding, “Music was incredibly important to the Moravians as it was part of their everyday life.”

The Moravian Music Foundation presents “A Historic Moravian Singstunde,” 2 p.m. Nov. 30, Moravian Historical Society, Nazareth.

Says Johnston, “This is the first time the German advent Singstunde (“Singing Hour”) will be held at the Nazareth location rather than in Bethlehem and will have a more historic bent.

“For example, during a traditional Singstunde there was only music and the thought was that the Holy Spirit spoke through the music so there was no need for a preacher.”

The event includes readings, information about the Singstunde and historic pipe organ built by Master Organ Builder David Tannenberg (1728-1804), and a 15-hymn sing-along.

Says Johnston, “The Moravians had a tradition of ‘polyglot’ singing which meant there would be multiple languages being sung at the same time.

“We shall focus on German and English and if persons would like to attempt German, we’ll talk a bit about pronunciations before we start.”

Attendees may view historic artifacts, including period musical instruments and a painting depicting the 1758 mission scene of the initial 63 Moravian settlements.

Moravian Historical Society Executive Director Susan Ellis will be on-hand to answer questions.

Space is limited. Reservations are required.
