Assistant borough manager introduced

At the Nov. 17 Macungie Borough Council meeting at the Macungie Institute, Kalman Sostarecz was introduced as the assistant borough manager. Sostarecz has over 25 years experience in local government. He will remain in this role until Dec. 31 and will become borough manager in the new year.

The sinkhole on Sonoma Way was discussed by Joshua Fry from Barry Isett & Associates. The borough allotted $40,000 to determine the cause of the problem and repair the sinkhole. The original sinkhole was excavated in October and another sinkhole developed.

A geologist from Barry Isett & Associates and Scheuermann Excavating determined there was a hole in the storm pipe and inlet connection. Debris developed in the storm drainage pipe which caused a backup. The system was flushed, grout was placed around the failed connection and all compromised soil was identified in the area. The contractor excavated to stable soil and the area was backfilled with stone and cement. Work continues to replace the sidewalk and curbing.

Council asked what should be done to prevent this from happening again. It was recommended to inspect the area piping to eliminate further sinkholes. Another suggestion was to seal all junctions of piping.

Fry said $14,500 of the $40,000 has been used.

The subject of water bills was discussed. One item was clarified that there has never been a discount offered by paying early but there is an additional fee if the payment is late. The billing system is being worked on and will be corrected soon.

Leaf collection continues in the borough Nov. 24 and Dec. 1.

Rebbecca Young asked about the procedure to secure the money budgeted for the Christmas Holiday event in Macungie. It was suggested receipts be presented to receive this money.

The ordinance to increase salaries of the mayor, council president and council members did not pass following a roll-call vote.

The agenda was amended to allow the 2026 budget to be advertised.

There was an executive session held to discuss personnel issues.
