Council questioned on office, phones, staff

Macungie Borough Council was confronted with a difficult problem involving a council member during the Oct. 20 meeting.

The circumstances were brought to the attention of council and the public by Tim Romig, a business owner in the borough.

Romig quoted Pennsylvania law using a code specified within the law saying a council member must not be a member of council with a criminal history.

Solicitor Patrick Armstrong said council is not responsible for an elected official’s criminal history,

Romig also went on to say Council President Ron Karboski and the borough solicitor allowed this to happen and wanted their resignations. Armstrong, again, stated this situation was not to be discussed with council.

Karboski said he maintains a journal and spoke about entries regarding this situation. There was a past suggestion council member Rob Rozak would resign as he was embarrassed. Another council member spoke to him.

Rozak resigned as a council member effective immediately but then retracted his resignation. The solicitor said this makes the resignation not valid as it never went through council.

A resident spoke about the bridge on Hickory Street, asking about the delay in the construction. There is an additional problem with the construction that just became evident so further delays with the construction are expected.

Also questioned is the progress of Church Street. Engineer Stan Wojciechowski stated UGI is working presently and that project is on time.

Another resident spoke about the lack of personnel within the borough offices. Jeff Hartman questioned why all these people are leaving and complained no one answers the phone.

Another resident spoke about the potential rezoning situation involving amending an existing ordinance.

Mayor Ron Conrad thanked Angela Faidley for all her hard work with the parade. There were suggestions to find a way to communicate the status of the parade should there be inclement weather or delays.

Trick or treat will be held Oct. 31.

The police gave a monthly report showing 241 incidents compared to 211 in 2024. Discussion ensued about traffic studies within the borough.

There is a delay in the radio project. Testing needs to be done as this proceeds.

Macungie Institute gave its quarterly report. There were 24 events for the quarter with 16 having no fee. There was a total of $1,458.16 income for the quarter.

Ordinance 2025-03 pertains to salaries and compensation for the mayor and council. It is proceeding for the advertisement for the public hearing. The vote to continue this was 3-2. Council members Greg Hutchison, John Yerman and Megan Sell voted in favor with an additional vote needed. The mayor voted in favor; council members Carl Sell and Todd Ritter voted against.

There was an executive session regarding personnel.
