Financial matters dominate meeting

Alburtis Borough Council met Sept. 24 to address financial allocations, pension obligations and municipal project updates during a meeting that balanced routine approvals with long-term fiscal planning.

After the call to order, pledge to the flag and an opportunity for public comment, council approved the minutes from the Sept. 10 meeting along with the latest round of bills for payment.

Mayor Kathleen Palmer did not have a report for council. Following, council heard updates from the borough’s fiscal consultant report. The Macungie Ambulance Corps also submitted its regular report on emergency services provided to the community.

Council then turned to new business, beginning with a recommendation to approve Payment Application No. 2 to Allgyer Enterprises for ongoing borough work. Members also discussed a request to transfer funds from the borough’s inflow and infiltration reserve into the sewer account to maintain infrastructure and ensure compliance with system demands.

Another item included accepting the lowest responsible quote for the removal of a tree located in an easement – a decision made with public safety and accessibility in mind.

Financial matters dominated the evening as officials reviewed notices of allocation for both the fire relief fund and state pension aid. The borough was awarded $16,174.42 in fire relief funds and $69,181.99 in pension aid. Council subsequently approved the allocation of the 2025 state pension aid, ensuring the funds would be distributed appropriately to cover employee retirement obligations.

Borough Solicitor Dave Knerr presented the Pension Plan Minimum Municipal Obligation, providing guidance on the required funding levels the borough must meet to comply with state law. Council acknowledged the importance of maintaining pension stability as a critical part of employee benefits and long-term financial responsibility.

The meeting closed with no additional business and adjournment followed.
