Tigers bounce back from early loss
If any of the other boys soccer teams in the Colonial League thought that Northwestern losing it opening game of the season was a sign that the Tigers were going to struggle, they are now thoroughly disappointed.
It turns out that Northwestern had a rough start, but it is also true that the opening loss was just a small blip on the radar, and it has served to recharge a strong team.
Northwestern added two wins, both in the Colonial League, to its season record this past week. Both wins were also shutouts that give the team three shutouts on the season.
Notre Dame of Green Pond (2-3 Colonial, 3-3 overall) always plays Northwestern Lehigh very tough and last week was no exception, but Northwestern (3-0, 5-1) downed the Crusaders 3-0.
The Tigers spread out the scoring with three players each getting a goal. Senior Logan Mesics recorded his fourth goal of the season and classmate Egan Boyle recorded his first. Cole Mertz also added a goal, the eighth of the season for the junior attacker. Mertz helped by assisting Mesics and Boyle on their goals as well.
The Bangor Slaters (2-2-1, 3-4-1) didn’t enjoy their visit to Tiger Stadium very much as they left after suffering a 5-0 loss. This time around the senior class flexed their muscles a little with Mesics getting his second hat trick of the season and Caelen Stangil scoring the other two goals for Northwestern Lehigh. Mertz offered up two assists and freshman Lyle Good assisted on one goal.
Junior Dean Carl was in goal for both of the shutouts.
Mertz and Mesics are in a friendly battle for the team lead in goals with both players having 12 through the first five games. Mertz has the team lead in assists with eight and Stangil has six.
The Tigers go on the road for three straight games with trips to Pen Argyl (1-3-1, 3-3-1), Southern Lehigh (3-0, 4-3), and Palisades (3-1, 4-1).
