Tigers beat Pirates

Kherington Yezik doesn’t seek out the spotlight. She doesn’t mind if her name isn’t called on the PA system during games.

She makes her contribution to the success of the team from the shadows. Other teams may not know exactly who she is, but they know she’s there.

Yezik played her role perfectly against Palisades Monday night when she had two assists in the Lady Tigers’ 7-0 win over the Pirates (4-1 Colonial, 6-1 overall).

Sophia Schaffer scored three goals all within the first 15 minutes of the game. On the first, the goalie came out to challenge Schaffer and that proved to be a mistake. Then, Schaffer took a pass and moved toward the goal to make it 2-0 with 30:14 left in the first half.

For the third goal, Yezik played a perfect ball to Schaffer who was about 30-yards away but saw an opening and fired on goal for her third goal with 25:08 remaining.

“Besides my technical and footwork skills,” Yezik said. “I do a lot of long distance passing and short distance passing because I feel it’s the one thing that I can really control throughout a game. Even if my touches are bad, if my shots are bad, I can always control the weight of my pass and the distance of my pass. I like scoring, but I love assisting more than scoring.”

For either team to score seven goals in the game was somewhat unexpected since neither team had given up a goal all season. The Lady Pirates had outscored their opponents 22-0 and the Tigers held a 41-0 scoring advantage.

“It’s obviously a team effort,” said Yezik. “I think our defense did a really good job, too. Coach [Justin] Smith was telling us all week that Palisades is a game to look forward to and it was our first home game in a long time, so I think the energy was there from everyone.

“Honestly, I think it was one of the best games we have played so far this year.”

The schedule had Northwestern open at home on August 22 against Fleetwood and then play the next five games, covering a little over two weeks, away from Tiger Stadium. The Tigers made trips to Central Columbia, Palmerton, Jim Thorpe, Blue Mountain, and Notre Dame (Green Pond). In addition to traveling, the team had a stretch of five games in eight days.

“We had all of those road games in a row and now we have to go up to Bangor tomorrow,” said head coach Jordan Smith. “That’s a lot on their bodies, but they’re battling.”

Northwestern picked up a win in Bangor on Tuesday but did allow their first goal of the season in a 7-1 victory. Before facing Palisades, Northwestern beat Jim Thorpe 12-0, downed Blue Mountain 3-0, and then jumped on Notre Dame of Green Pond for a 7-0 win.

The Tigers get to enjoy three straight home games with two of them coming up this week as they welcome Pen Argyl (0-5, 1-5) and Southern Lehigh (2-1, 3-2) to town.
