PHS girls tennis takes EPC title

The Parkland girls tennis team has a new head coach this season.

The team’s success remains the same.

Candace Young took over this season when Michael Hingston stepped down after 11 years at the helm.

Hingston’s teams won the past four East Penn Conference and District 11 Class 3A titles.

Young’s team continued the streak of league titles when it beat Emmaus last week to cap an unbeaten season in the EPC at 15-0 and 15-2 overall.

The Trojans beat Emmaus last week 5-2 by sweeping the singles matches and taking two of the doubles contests.

Lexie Warsing won her match 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Sadie Pollard picked up a forfeit win at No. 2 singles. Sonia Lee won the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-1.

Parkland’s top doubles team of Kiana Miles and Yihan Lee earned a 6-2, 6-3 win the match, while the PHS team of Mehek Garg and Maheen Jan took their doubles match in an 8-4 pro set.

The Trojans also beat Stroudsburg last week, 6-1 on Sept. 18.

Pollard and Lee won singles matches against the Mountaineers, while Miles and Lee took the No. 2 doubles match. Kate Gilchrist and Hannah Schmoyer won the No. 3 doubles match by a 6-0, 6-0 score and Ariana Tahir and Ashly Carl earned a win at No. 3 doubles. Garg and Jan won the alternate doubles match.

Two days earlier the Trojans downed Nazareth, 5-2. Warsing, Pollard and Lee won their singles matches in straight sets. Miles and Li pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win in the top doubles match, while Garg and Jan rolled to an 8-0 pro set win.

Parkland finished first in the EPC with Central Catholic (14-1) second and Emmaus (13-2) third.

The Trojans won’t see the Vikings in the district tournament as Central Catholic is a Class 2A team. Parkland will be the top seed in the District 11 team tournament and the favorite to win its fifth straight title.

Before that the team will compete in Thursday’s East Penn Conference Championships at Freedom.
