NWL field hockey drops close games vs. SL, Bangor

The Northwestern Lehigh field hockey team lost back-to-back games for the first time this season when it fell to Southern Lehigh and Bangor last week by a combined two goals.

After their 3-2 loss to Southern Lehigh, Northwestern ran into a Bangor team that has allowed just four goals all season. The result was a 1-0 Bangor win that gives the Slaters a leg up on Northwestern for playoff seeding because of the head-to-head competition.

Bangor, however, lost to Southern Lehigh and faces another top league competitor in Salisbury this week. Salisbury (11-0, 10-0), Southern Lehigh (8-2-1, 8-1-1) and Bangor (10-1, 8-1) have all wrapped up district playoff spots in 2A field hockey while Northwestern (7-3, 7-3) is atop the 1A classification and closing in on a district playoff spot.

Northwestern took out some frustrations on Lehighton (2-7-1, 0-7-1) when it downed the Indians 9-0. The win actually started slowly as the Tigers held just a 1-0 lead after the first quarter with the goal coming with 8:56 left in the quarter as Mykayla Bressi took a feed from Evelyn Alboucq for the only goal of the opening quarter of play.

The second quarter ran down to just under the two-minute mark before either team found another goal. Taylor Langley picked up an assist with a pass to McKenna Church who scored with 1:55 left before the half. With just :05 left in the second, Ella Bressi made it 3-0 with Hannah Gober getting the assist.

Halftime was well spent apparently because Northwestern took over the game when the teams returned to the field. Gober and Langley both went from being the one feeding the ball to the scorer to the top billing with third period goals. Gober scored just over four minutes into the third quarter and Langley hit with 3:40 left in the third. Langley, a senior, would get the next goal too, when she scored with 10:52 left in the final quarter to make it 6-0 in favor of Northwestern.

Sophomore Nora Peterson took over the fourth quarter when she scored three goals within five minutes of each other. The first came on an assist from Madelyn Lagowy with 5:51 left in regulation and she then added two more in the fourth with Church assisting on the final goal of the game with 1:03 left in regulation to cap the 9-0 win.

The Lady Tigers have road trips to Palmerton (6-5, 6-4) and Nazareth (10-1, 8-1 EPC) before returning home Monday to host Oley Valley (7-2-1).
