Northwestern boys soccer beats Pirates, Indians
A trio of Tigers continue to lead the Northwestern boys soccer team’s offense this season. The Tigers continue to roll this season and locked up wins over Palisades, Central Columbia, and Lehighton over the past week.
The toughest battle for Northwestern Lehigh (10-0 overall, 7-0 Colonial) came in the nonleague game against Central Columbia (9-3 overall, 4-1 Heartland) where Northwestern won 4-1.
Cole Mertz handled all of the goal scoring with four goals as Caelen Stangil and Logan Mesics split the four assists evenly among themselves.
Mertz week included seven goals, and he added five assists as Northwestern went 3-0 this past week. Stangil also had seven goals and contributed five assists while Logan Mesics had six goals and led the team with seven assists.
The offense was on full display in an 8-2 win over Palisades (7-1-3, 5-1-3) and a 13-0 win over Lehighton. Stangil had three goals against Palisades and Mertz and Mesics each contributed two goals. Freshman Lyle Good added a goal and an assist against both Palisades and Lehighton (6-5, 3-5).
Stangil (4 goals), Mesics (4 goals), and Mertz (1 goal) combined to score nine goals against Lehighton and Good also chipped in with a goal. Seniors Austin Bittenbender had a goal and an assist to beat the Indians and classmate Isaiah Lynch added an assist.
A trio of sophomores provided the rest of the offense with Zach Frey and Brennan Scott both getting a goal and Preston Hurdle adding an assist. The goal for Scott was his first at the varsity level and Hurdle’s assist was his first varsity assist.
Mesics, Mertz, and Stangil have combined to score 87-percent of the Tigers goals this season. Mesics leads with 22, Mertz has 21, and Stangil has 16 goals this season. Mertz also leads the team with 15 assists, while Stangil (14) and Mesics (11) round out the players with double digits in assists.
Good has three goals and five assists in his freshman season.
The Tigers have wrapped up a district playoff spot but still have some battling to do in the Colonial League as they hunt for the top seed in the league playoffs. This week Northwestern plays at Moravian Academy (7-2-1, 7-1-1) before hosting Saucon Valley (9-1, 9-0) and Salisbury (1-6, 1-6).
