Hornets bounce-back after early loss

After a season-opening nonconference defeat on the road by a goal, the Emmaus High School girls soccer team returned home and bounced back with two straight victories at Memorial Field, one being in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

The Hornets fell to Wilson West Lawn 2-1 on the road in the season opener back on Saturday, August 23. They responded with their first win of the regular season in the home and conference opener last Tuesday, Aug. 26, taking down Whitehall 1-0 in overtime. Emmaus closed out the week with a 4-0 nonconference victory over Dallas.

Against the Bulldogs, Ella Scharper scored the lone goal for her team coming from the penalty spot, but Wilson found the back of the net twice, one of which was also a penalty kick, to leave its home field as winners.

In the win over the Zephyrs, the two teams could not get their offense going and the game went into overtime as a scoreless tie.

Eight minutes into the first overtime Scharper scored to give her team its first win on the year. Sadie Wallace finished with six saves in net for the Hornets.

Emmaus had its highest scoring output of the season to date in its victory against the Dragons as the offense tallied four goals, three coming in the second half where they were able to put Dallas away.

Hannah Berk got the scoring going with the lone goal in the first half. Giuliana Meyer opened the second half with a goal and Scharper continued her streak of consecutive games with a goal as she added her third. Sofia Isaksson rounded out the scoring for her team with a goal late in the second half. Lizzie Bender assisted on all four goals. Wallace finished with three saves and Olivia Haberl had one as the duo split time in net.

Emmaus, which is 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, has three more home games in a row this week as it hosts Pocono Mountain East on Wednesday Central Catholic Saturday and then Pocono Mountain West Monday.
