Freshmen shine in boys soccer win over Lehighton

It’s easy to hate Mondays. However, this past Monday was a good one for the Salisbury boys soccer team.

The young team has been feeling its way through the schedule this season and was in the throws of a three-game losing skid when this past Monday rolled around and the Lehighton Indians came to visit.

The freshman class showed the team has a bright future as both of the goals in a 2-0 win. came from ninth-graders.

The defenses were in charge through the first 15 minutes of the game until Soren Ruiz struck for the first goal of the game with 25:27 left in the first half. The rest of the first half and the first 10 minutes of the second half were again handled by the defenses as Lehighton looked for a game tying goal and Salisbury was in the market for some insurance. With just under 30 minutes left in regulation, freshman Jaxson Case found the back of the goal to give the Falcons the insurance they wanted with a 2-0 advantage that they rode to the end of the game.

Goalkeeper Julian Makhoul was called on to make three saves in the win. That was an easy day compared to what the junior goalie faced against Jim Thorpe when he was called upon to make 22 saves. Salisbury took an early lead, but saw the Olympians put four unanswered goals on the board to take a 4-3 win.

Senior Christian Marinos notched his first goal of the game to put the Falcons up 1-0 and Case struck with a goal of his own to give Salisbury a 2-0 lead.

Before halftime, Jim Thorpe got goals from three different players to take a 3-2 edge into the break. In the second half, Matteo Cacco scored his second goal of the day for Thorpe as they moved to a two-goal lead. Marinos was not finished yet as he added his second goal of the game, but Salisbury’s comeback was stopped there.

Between the Jim Thorpe and Lehighton games was a 7-1 loss to Wilson.

Salisbury (2-6) hosts Notre Dame of Green Pond (6-3-0) before three road games at Bangor (5-4-1), Palmerton (1-8-0), and Pen Argyl (3-5-1).
