Five area golfers reach D-11 final
GREEN POND — Two Northwestern Lehigh golfers qualified for Monday’s District 11 Qualifier.
And both played well enough to advance to next week’s championship tournament.
Northwestern coach Tim Miller was beaming about Cole Dynda and Skylar Kern after Monday’s event.
Dynda tied for 13th along with Kern, with both shooting rounds of 89.
Miller, in his 15th season at Northwestern, was more than pleased with the play of Dynda and Kern.
“Both of those guys helped turn our season around,” Miller said. “Last season we finished with three wins and eight losses; this season we were 7-4 and Cole and Skylar helped turn us into a winner. They executed like professionals … they’re some of the better golfers in the league. They came out and played very well.”
Dynda didn’t think it was his best effort.
“I thought I could have had some better shots … some of my problems were more club selection. I thought I could have done a better job choosing. I thought I overthought some shots, too.”
Dynda, who had played the course twice before, shot a 44 going out, with three pars, and on the back nine he carded three pars and a birdie on the next-to-last hole for a 45.
Kern shot a 45 on the front side. He parred the 11th (par 5, 477 yards), birdied the 14th (par 4, 318 yards) and parred the 15th (par 5, 520 yards). He looked strong to open the final nine, with back-to-back pars, and added a par on the 2nd hole (par 5, 554 yards) — the No. 1-rated hole on the course.
“I thought I could have played better,” Kern said. He wasn’t pleased with the final three holes, shooting 6 over after a strong start on the back. “My second shot on par 5s were kind of hurting me. My 9-iron was my best club in my bag.
“The trees made it too tight,” he added with a chuckle about the finishing holes.
Both players will compete Tuesday in the District 11 Class 2A Championship at The Steel Club in Hellertown.
