Emmaus girls tennis starts 7-0
The Emmaus girls tennis team is 7-0 through the first two weeks of the 2025 season.
The Hornets have won all six of their East Penn Conference matches by 7-0 scores, with their other win this season coming in a 3-2 nonleague victory over Southern Lehigh.
Emmaus opened the season against Easton on Aug. 18. Sophia Kaufman won the first singles match 6-0, 6-0, while Anshi Kanani and Gab Tranguch also won singles matches against the Rovers.
Brooke DiGiacomo and Nat Hillegass were one of three EHS doubles teams to win 6-0, 6-0. Fiona Harvey and Avary Puliatte also won in straight sets. Katy Kapp and Emily Kaufman won 6-1, 6-1, while Leah Perez and Ava Perez took the alternate match in straight sets.
In a win over Bethlehem Catholic two days later, Sophia Kaufman dropped the first set to the Golden Hawks Elizabeth Schock, but came back to dominate the next two sets and win the match 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Kanani (6-0, 6-1) and Tranguch (6-0, 6-0) also won singles matches.
Hornet doubles teams of DiGiacomo/Hillegass, Harvey/Puliatte, Kapp/Emily Kaufman and Leah Perez/Eva Perez all won their matches against Beca.
Two days later the Hornets beat Northampton with Sophia Kaufman, Kanani and Tranguch winning singles matches and all four doubles teams (DiGiacomo/Hillegass, Harvey/Puliatte, Kapp/Emily Kaufman and Leah Perez/Eva Perez) earning wins. Tranguch won in straight sets for the second consecutive match.
In their fourth match of the week on Saturday, Aug. 23, Emmaus saw Southern Lehigh win the top two singles matches, both in three sets, while Tranguch took the third singles match and the Hornets picked up two doubles wins.
DiGiacomo and Hillegass won their match 6-4, 6-0. Harvey and Puliatte notched a 6-0, 6-1 win in the nonleague match.
Emmaus started its second week of the new season with a decisive win over Pocono Mountain East on Tuesday, Aug. 26 that saw three matches end in straight sets.
Tranguch won the third singles match 6-0, 6-0, with Sophia Kaufman and Kanani also earned singles wins.
DiGiacomo and Hillegass took the No. 2 doubles match 6-0, 6-0, while Kapp and Emily Kaufman recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 doubles position. Harvey and Zoe Santana won the No. 3 doubles match and Puliatte and Riya Patel won the alternate doubles match.
Emmaus rolled to another win two days later, beating East Stroudsburg South while surrendering just one game in one match.
Sophia Kaufman won by forfeit and Kanani picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win against the Cavaliers. DiGiacomo/Hillegass, Harvey/Santana and Kapp/Emily Kaufman won doubles matches 6-0, 6-0. Patel/Puliatte took the alternate doubles match 8-0.
The Hornets finished off the week last Friday against Freedom. Sophia Kaufman, Kanani and Tranguch won singles matches, while DiGiacomo/Hillegass, Harvey/Santana, Kapp/Emily Kaufman and Patel/Puliatte won doubles matches against the Kids.
With three weeks left in the regular season, the Hornets will see some of the league’s top teams in the coming days with Liberty (5-1) coming up on Sept. 6, Nazareth (6-0) on Sept. 18 and Parkland (5-1) to finish the regular season on Sept. 22.
