Concert Review: Allentown Symphony Pops rocks Broadway on Sixth

Sixth Street was bumper-to-bumper. The parking deck was filling up. Concert-goers streamed into Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.

The scene had earmarks of a Broadway opening night.

Call it “Broadway on Sixth.”

“Broadway Rocks! - ‘Wicked,’ ‘Phantom of the Opera’ & More,” Sept. 27, Miller Symphony Hall, in its 126th year, was the inaugural concert for Allentown Symphony Orchestra Pops (ASO) opening the Orchestra’s 75th season.

Inside Symphony Hall, the electricity began with the instrumental opener, “Jesus Christ Superstar Overture” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The ASO was in action from the opening notes with vibrancy, precision and relentless intensity under the baton of ASO music director Diane Wittry, in her 30th anniversary season.

The Broadway connection was elevated by guest artists Chloe Lowery, LaKisha Jones and Dan Domenech, each a veteran of the Broadway stage, for “Everybody Rejoice” from “The Wiz,” with the Allentown Symphony Chorus and Dieruff High School Husky Harmony vocal ensemble joining the ASO. “Hallelujah,” indeed, as they sang.

In rapid-fire fashion, with some fantastic costume changes for Lowery and Jones, the soloists took the spotlight for one Broadway signature hit after another: Jones, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” from “The Bodyguard Musical”; Domenech in Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out” from the show “Movin’ Out,” and Lowery, Jones and Domenech, “Circle of Life” from “The Lion King,” augmented by the call and response of the Chorus.

The ASO performed instrumental selections from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera,” which, under Wittry’s baton, took on renewed magnificence.

“Seasons of Love” from “Rent,” sung by Lowery, Jones and Domenech, had special poignancy, from pristine vocal opening, to spectacular harmonies, to a powerful build and finish.

Lowery was splendid in “Natural Woman” from “Beautiful: The Carol King Musical,” backed by Chorus vocalists Kathie Leslie, Beth McElroy and Dorothy Cockrell.

Lowery, Jones and Domenech sang a rousing “Proud Mary” from “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” (2019) with the Chorus, brass and Jones blasting (and Jones go-go dancing) the frenetic refrain.

The two-and-one-half-hour high-energy concert, with a sold-out attendance estimated at 1,000, was akin to a Broadway musical nine-song First Act and eight-song (including encore) Second Act.

Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” from “Bohemian Rhapsody the Musical” was led by a dynamic Domenech in full rock-star stance, with Lowery, Jones and Chorus. Especially prominent accompanying the ASO on this and other selections were Huck Browne, electric guitar; Paul Rostock, electric bass; Michael Toth, piano, and Chris McWilliams drums. The music forces swept out over the audience all the way up to the hall’s two balconies.

Jones brought disco to the house with the Gloria Gaynor’s iconic “I Will Survive” from “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.”

Lowery and Domenech delighted in the humorous “Suddenly Seymour” from “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Domenech got the audience to clap and sing along for Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” from “A Beautiful Noise.” It was “So good, so good, so good.”

Lowery’s voice shone like fine crystal in “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked.”

Jones donned the signature black fedora for Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” from “MJ the Musical,” replete with vocal clicks and whoops.

Stadium rock with the big drum beat and audience participation raised the roof with Lowery, Jones, Domenech and the Chorus in the rousing finale, Queen’s “We Will Rock You”/”We Are The Champions.”

The encore, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,’” encapsulated the evening’s exuberance with a power ballad that powered the belief for another season of stupendous Allentown Symphony concerts in its home, this lyrical gem of a music hall.

How can you top such a concert as this?
