A lesson in history for 9/11

For the past four years, Grade 8 team teachers from Eyer Middle School prepare a program to help their students understand the events of 9/11. Individually, teachers pre-taught lessons in their classes leading up to Sept. 11.

All Grade 8 students in Pods 5 and 6 met in the auditorium for a PowerPoint presentation explaining the history of 9/11 structured for middle level students. Students and staff then walked silently past the thousands of flags planted along the path in front of the school.

Students returned to the auditorium to view the film “Flight 93.” As the film came to end, it noted how these passengers sacrificed their lives for the lives of others and their country.

Students recognized the heroism of the passengers of Flight 93 and the auditorium erupted into cheers as the names of the passengers scrolled. The cheering continued through the last name listed. A question and answer period followed the film giving students an opportunity to ask questions and share experiences about this day and what it means for the country.
