Yard sale benefits library

In a clear display of Catasauqua community spirit, Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, Friends of the Public Library of Catasauqua, the library’s board and members of Historic Catasauqua Preservation Association teamed up to present a remarkable fundraising effort benefiting the public library.

The Aug. 9 event was partially held outside with most of the items for sale indoors in the church’s social hall and a side room. The social hall was packed with a wide array of items to purchase.

Barb Roth, a library board member, served as the volunteer welcome person to meet patrons by the entrance door with a smile. She was delighted by the number of items donated and by the large attendance.

There were no price tags on the merchandise because all the items were donated for sale, with most coming from Catasauqua donors. Purchasers were assigned a cost when they checked out.

Janice Lathrop, a longtime Catasauqua volunteer, was selling tickets for attendees to purchase. The ticket reserved the buyers’ right to return 1 p.m. when the yard sale ended to pick whatever items remained they wanted to buy.

In a side room were numerous clothing items for sale. Beth Woolley, of Hanover Township, Lehigh County, and Mollie Laubach-Haydt, formerly of Catasauqua, were happy in their volunteer role of assisting attendees.

Sales clerk Deb Mellish, former Catasauqua Borough Council member and community-spirited volunteer, cheerfully assisted and answered customers’ questions as they examined the items they might purchase.

The kitchen staff — Emily Zacharda, Amy Feidler and Suzanne Rafferty — were busy serving a number of breakfast and lunch items. The breakfast menu offered baked goods, coffee, tea or juice. Lunch offerings were pork barbecue, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, chips, iced tea and soda.

The streets around the church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua, were filled with cars parked and others searching for a parking spot. Many attendees commented on the large amount of items for purchase.

Shoppers and volunteers alike all appeared happy to support this fundraiser for the library.
