A motorcyclist was fatally injured in a three vehicle crash along Interstate 78 in Salisbury Township Aug. 3, according to Lehigh County Coroner officials and Pennsylvania State Police.
Gavin J. Long, 20, of Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County, was pronounced dead 11:15 a.m. at the crash scene in the area of mile marker 58.9 along Interstate 78, according to a press release from the coroner’s office dated Aug. 4.
Long died from multiple blunt force injuries and the manner of death was determined to be an accident, according to authorities.
Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville detailed the crash as follows:
At approximately 10 a.m. Aug. 3, Long’s motorcycle was traveling in the middle lane of I-78 eastbound near mile marker 58.8 in Salisbury Township behind a tractor trailer.
A luxury sport utility vehicle was traveling in the left lane near to the motorcycle.
Long tried to change lanes, however, struck the truck.
The collision threw the motorcyclist under the truck trailer where he was struck by the rear tires, according to state police.
The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the SUV and “came to an uncontrolled final rest in the left lane,” according to state police.
The truck stopped in the middle lane after the collision and the SUV stopped along the right shoulder.
The Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office is among agencies investigating the crash.
