Serving up kindness Traditions residents deliver meals and smiles
Dennis Nemura and Marcie Nisley enjoy giving their time to volunteer-based initiatives, especially when it connects them to others in meaningful ways.
With a meal in tow, Nemura and Nisley, both residents of Traditions of Hanover, delivered nutritious meals to homebound seniors through the Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley. The private, nonprofit organization serves over 2,000 seniors and adults with disabilities throughout Lehigh and Northampton counties and portions of Carbon County.
Nemura and Nisley are no strangers to the meal program. For 10 years, Nemura was a part of a group that delivered 10 to 15 meals a week for the Mountain Meals Program in rural Summit County, Colorado, where he previously lived.
“It’s a gratifying experience being able to help someone else. It warms the cockles of my heart,” Nemura said.
For Nisley, volunteering for Meals on Wheels became a full-circle moment as she recalled her parents’ service.
“Everyone we connected expressed their gratitude,” she said. “It’s a rewarding experience; I’m always looking for opportunities to help others and give back to the community.”
Nemura and Nisley were accompanied by Traditions of Hanover’s Executive Director Cathy Heimsoth and Marketing Director Megan Sedlock. The management team of the independent living retirement community in Hanover Township establishes partnerships with community initiatives, so residents stay active and connected to their surrounding community and can contribute to causes they care about.
