Dobil named All-State by PBCA
Will Dobil had a senior season to go down in the record books for the Parkland High School baseball team.
In 26 games, Dobil finished with a team-best 35 hits and added 15 RBI, scored 23 runs and was walked 15 times. He had a hit in 22 of the team’s 26 games and helped lead the Trojans to Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 6A titles as a team captain.
The EPC First Teamer added on to his accolades and etched his name in program history as he was named to the Pennsylvania Baseball Coaches Association All-State First Team. It’s just the second time in program history for a Trojan baseball player to be named All-State by the PBCA.
“To be named All-State is a complete honor,” said Dobil. “It shows my hard work paying off. When I heard the news, I just went back to all the final reps I took in the weight room and the final swings in the cages with my hands bleeding from swinging for hours.
“I was never highly recruited and always doubted by coaches, so I had one thing to do, and that’s go to work and show them what I can do. From my knowledge, it has only happened one other time in Parkland Baseball history (Gabe Mosser), so it’s awesome to be a part of Parkland Baseball history.”
Head coach Kurt Weber had nothing but praise for his senior shortstop and knew he deserved to be a part of this distinguished team. He mentioned how Dobil was a start both on and off the field.
“Will’s numbers make him worthy of all-star consideration,” said Weber. “But what takes him to All-State level, in my mind, is that his performance stepped up in the postseason. When the games meant the most against the toughest competition, he produced at an even higher level.
“His impact off the field was even greater. He is a phenomenal leader. He is the role model of how to work in the fall, in the weight room, in the classroom, in addition to on the field. He is a team-first guy, a great teammate and captain. It is extremely rewarding to see his hard work, and him going about his work in what we the coaches feel is the right way, pay off. We will definitely miss him next year, but I am confident that his impact on the program will carry on.”
Parkland finished the regular season 14-5 overall and 13-3 in the conference. The Trojans had a strong regular season, but still had some adversity along the way to the postseason run that brought home two golds. During that postseason, Dobil was 11 for 19 (.579 BA) with six walks and zero strikeouts. He also handled 30 of 31 chances at shortstop (.968 F%).
“The season gave us a lot of barriers, and as a captain, it was my job to help the team through these struggles to win,” said Dobil. “Big losses to teams like Central and Whitehall got us mad, which I was happy about. It was good for the guys to understand that we can’t just show up and win every game. We have to come ready to give it everything we’ve got to win every day. Once we had that mindset set into our minds for the playoffs, nothing could stop us.”
At the start of the year, as a senior, Dobil knew this was his chance to make history and help bring Parkland back to the top of EPC and District 11 baseball.
“I just had to trust my training,” Dobil said. “I put hundreds of hours in the gym and the cages, so this was just the fun part, being able to go out there and do what I love. In regard to leading, I knew that I had to help the guys buy into the championship mindset. In the years past, not many guys were buying into the program, and I promised I would change that if I ever had the opportunity to become a captain and do what I do best... lead.”
Dobil will be heading to Lafayette College this fall and is planning to walk on to the baseball team.
