PHS boys lacrosse battled through adversity
The Parkland High School boys lacrosse team had a successful 2025 season, finishing 16-6 overall and 7-2 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
The Trojans reached the semifinals of the EPC playoffs and the championship game of the District 11 tournament, falling to Easton in overtime.
The Trojans’ season ended in dramatic fashion by one goal in the district final, but they faced a lot of adversity from the beginning of the year, with injuries and even playing under a new head coach in Cory Andrews, who stepped in for Vincent Arezzi after a couple of games.
“Overall, the season went well,” said Andrews. “We battled a lot of adversity, but we stuck together, played hard and had fun. Unfortunately, we did not achieve our ultimate goals of winning championships, losing both of our playoff matchups in overtime, but my players never quit and responded to every challenge that was thrown at them. It’s how they responded which I am most proud of.
“We demonstrated that we weren’t going to back down and we would fight until the last whistle and displayed a positive culture and strong work ethic all season.”
There were several top moments from the season that Andrews could not even choose one.
“It’s extremely tough to just pick one moment throughout this year, but I would have to say I am proudest of the effort my players made with their backs up against the wall in the district championship,” Andrews said. “We believed in each other and showed strong character in a tough moment, the players or teams would have folded under similar pressure. There were fun moments throughout this year, on and off the field, but we will cherish those moments and memories to ourselves.”
Parkland is losing eight seniors to graduation, including some all-time program greats. The senior class includes include Mazz Afif, Lincoln Brayford, Maxwell Esteban, Blake Finnegan, Parker Kusko, Andrew Matulevicius, Evan Saylor and Arjun Williams.
“We are graduating a lot of talent and experience this year,” said Andrews. “There’s a district all-time leading scorer, four-year starting goalie, leader at the faceoff X and much more. They played for three straight district championships, and we will miss their hard work and leadership.”
Kusko led the attack with 84 goals and 16 assists. John Gerancher and Colton Arezzi both finished with 47 goals with the former dishing out 36 assists and the latter 56 assists. Finnegan tallied 35 goals and 17 assists. Matt Kelley recorded 21 goals and eight assists. Bailey Wetmore notched 19 goals and 10 assists and Danny Tapia contributed 10 goals and nine assists. Esteban won 236 faceoffs. Matulevicius finished with 183 saves.
Andrews, who took over as the acting head coach in the middle of the season, is ready to lead the new group in 2026.
“Each year brings new challenges and fun memories,” Andrews said. “I am excited to work with a group of guys that buys into playing as one, for Parkland, for each other and with a common idea that it takes a lot of hard work to put yourselves in a position to win championships.”
