LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Summer playground program up and running

June 20 marked the official arrival of summer and it sure has been ... well ... WET! Fear not! Our gardens, lawns and flowers will grow exponentially and we will soon be weeding, harvesting and complaining about the heat as we look for bodies of water to cool off in.

Salisbury Township’s Summer Playground Program will run through July 25. The program is held 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday evenings. Locations include Lindberg, Devonshire, Frank McCoullough Sr. (formerly Green Acres) and Laubach parks. The program is open to elementary-aged children of Salisbury Township residents, who have completed kindergarten through age 12. It’s not too late to register but registration must be completed online by a parent/guardian before the child’s first day of camp. Visit salisburylehighpa.gov. Click on “Register for Summer Park Program” under Quick Links.

If you are a lover of the outdoors, be it hiking, biking, trail running or dog walking, check out the Wildlands Conservancy website for the top five hiking trails in the Greater Lehigh Valley.

The website provides a map and important details like distance, difficulty levels and addresses for trail heads. Two of the top trails include South Mountain Preserve near the western side of the township and Black River Sanctuary in eastern Salisbury. Go to www.wildlandspa.org, find hiking trails under the Explore tab. Happy trails!

Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church will hold a Christmas in July Craft and Vendor Fair 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 26 sponsored by the Ladies Aid Society. Tables are still available for crafters or vendors. If interested, call 610-797-4242 for an application.

The yard waste drop-off center at Devonshire will be open June 26 and 28 and the Franko drop-off site will be open June 30, July 3 and July 5. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
