Stones win doubles title
The Emmaus doubles tennis team of Nick Stone and Chris Stone rolled to a District 11 title last week, beating all four of its district tournament opponents in two sets.
The Hornet duo and siblings entered the tournament as the top seed and beat their first opponents 6-0, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, the Stones rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Parkland’s Jack Chu and Jacky Zhang, who were seeded ninth in the field of 16 doubles teams.
The Stones met another Parkland pair in the semifinals as they took care of the No. 4 seeded team of Manav Patel and Kevin Yao 6-4, 6-2.
The title match saw the top two seeds meet for the gold medal as the Hornet team beat Freedom’s Noah Rodburg and Eric Wu 6-3, 6-2 to finish a dominant run through the bracket.
Two other Emmaus doubles teams also qualified for districts. Both were unseeded in the event and dropped their first-round matches against seeded opponents.
Cole Stuchko and Sai Uppiretia opened the tournament against the No. 2 seeded team of Gideon Knowles and Vanash Singhal (Nazareth) and fell 6-4, 6-2.
Ayden Kegley and Caleb Brashear had the task of competing against Rodburg and Wu in the first round and lost 6-1, 6-2.
Rodburg, a Freedom senior, also finished as runner up in the district singles tournament.
Emmaus moves on to the district team tournament as the No. 3 seed with a first-round match up against No. 6 Nazareth. That match was postponed Monday because of rain and rescheduled for Tuesday.
If the Hornets beat Nazareth they will advance to the semifinals where a likely match against the No. 2 seed and rival Parkland awaits. The Trojans take on No. 7 Easton in the first round.
