Hornets strike gold at league meet

After the Emmaus track and field teams suffered their only loss of the season in their final dual meet, head coach Kami Reinhard wanted to make sure her team bounced back with a strong league championship meet.

She latched onto a metaphor about not letting speed bumps turn into road blocks, and impressed that upon her team last week.

The plan worked.

When the Hornets arrived at the league meet the speed bump was in the rear view mirror. And their path was clear of roadblocks.

They ran, leaped and vaulted to gold medals, broken records and one team title at last week’s East Penn Conference Championships at Whitehall, held last Wednesday and Thursday.

“For our team we knew we were a top team, it was just getting over the bump we hit last week,” said Reinhard after her girls team hoisted the title trophy at the league meet. “They did not allow it become a roadblock.”

Junior Mady McCartney led the way for Emmaus, earning gold medals in the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs, while setting meet records in two of her three individual events.

Senior pole vaulter Tyler Grabinski also set a meet record by clearing 16 feet for the gold medal.

Junior Claudia Walls won her third straight league title in high jump, while teammate Kayla-Rayne Quinones earned her first league gold in 100-meter hurdles.

Emmaus also captured a pair of relay titles as the boys 4x100 (Kai Jefferson-Rushing, Nicholi Marsh, Dorrian McCargo and Michael Milot) and the boys 4x400 (Jared Petre, Miles Cook, Rien George and Richard Will) both ran to first-place finishes at leagues.

McCartney repeated as champ in the 3200 and 1600 while also earning a league title in the 800.

Her 3200 time of 10:42.80 set a meet record on the first day of the meet with teammate Payton Campbell second at 10:52.51.

McCartney and Campbell have been a tough one-two punch for EHS in distance events. While McCartney usual leads the way, Campbell’s presence plays a large part in her success.

“She’s right there with me the whole race,” said McCartney. “Having one of my teammates with me helps me a lot, and pushes me too.”

McCartney added a second gold medal and league record when she won the 1600 on the second day of the meet, posting a time of 4:48.79.

After running three miles of championship races, McCartney ended her meet with a win in the 800 in 2:20.53.

Grabinski entered this season as the school record and meet record holder in pole vault at 15-6. He set a new personal best and raised the bar when he cleared 16 feet last week.

“He has been shooting for that goal for the last year and a half,” said Reinhard. “It was really, really amazing.”

Quinones also reached a goal she has been seeking for her entire hurdling career. She earned her first gold with a first-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles last week.

“It feels so good and refreshing because I’ve wanted this for so long,” said Quinones as she held back tears. “I’m just so proud of myself to get here.”

Quinones won the event in 15.04. She posted a 15.25 in her preliminary heat, just .04 off defending champ and top seed Maggie Scalzo’s 15.21 time in heats.

When Scalzo (Easton) hit a hurdle and fell in the lane next to Quinones, the Hornet senior kept her composure. She maintained her stride and stayed in front to take the win.

“I just tried to stay focused and I hope Maggie is OK,” said Quinones. “I don’t like winning by default. I never wish for anyone to fall. When it happened I knew I couldn’t let the same happen to me. I just tried to push through and keep my form tight.”

Walls holds the Emmaus school record in high jump and entered the meet as a two-time defending champ. She won her third straight title with a jump of 5-2 last week.

“It feels really good. I put a lot of hard work into this,” Walls said. “These past two years, especially this year I’m becoming a lot more consistent. That’s really helpful, especially in the more important meets.”

Those gold medals and many other place-winning performances enabled the Hornets to edge Parkland in team points and take this year’s EPC meet girls team title.

“It’s a really special feeling,” said Campbell, a senior. “When you get an individual medal its also exciting. But for the team, seeing everybody come together at once, that’s the biggest thing. It’s really special.”

In the boys 4x100, the foursome of Jefferson-Rushing, Marsh, McCargo and Milot ran a meet record time of 42.18. The race was another example of not letting a speed bump turn into a roadblock.

“Last meet Parkland beat us so we had to come back sharp,” said Jefferson-Rushing. “We put the hard work in at practice working on the 4x100 every single day and we made sure today was the day. Everybody ran full speed. Everybody was healthy. I’m proud of boys.”

While the meet record fell, the relay team has another goal next week, along with winning a district title.

“We just went out and did what we had to do,” said Marsh. “This is our season best, but we’re going for the school record. That’s 41.8. We’re not stopping. We’re going for it all.”

The Hornet boys 4x400 team hadn’t been together since early in the season when Cook suffered an injury. He returned in time for the league meet where he and teammates Petre, George and Will ran a time of 3:26.06.

“Yesterday we lost in the 4x800 to Parkland,” said Petre said last Thursday. “We thought we’d win that easily and we did not. Getting that back today felt really good.”

The team didn’t have a goal time in mind. Its only objective was to win.

“We said we were just running for a medal,” said Cook, one of three seniors on the relay team. “It feels great. We were going out to have fun. I’m just happy we got [the medal] too. That’s the fastest time we’ve ever run.”

Emmaus led the whole way as Will staked the team to an early lead before Cook and George made sure to keep it for their anchor man.

“Being able to hand off the baton to Jared knowing he’s going to keep that lead is great,” said George, a junior.

The team heads to next week’s District 11 championships with one clear goal in mind.

“Win again and go to states,” said Will.

The District 11 Championships are scheuled for Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14-15 at Whitehall.
