Hornets bounce back after loss

After winning the season’s first 14 matches, the Emmaus High School boys volleyball team suffered its first setback last week when it dropped a nonconference match to Governor Mifflin.

The Hornets remain unbeaten in East Penn Conference play.

Emmaus also won a pair of league matches in straight sets last week, beating EPC opponent Bethlehem Catholic last Tuesday and Southern Lehigh two nights later.

In the win over the Golden Hawks, Emmaus won by scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-14. Both Sander Houtz and Josiah Brown led the offense with seven kills, while Colin Holden and Lucas Mondin finished with six kills.

Cameron Furniss and Bilaal Kerim recorded four digs. Jayden Perez tallied 17 assists and Ben Skekel contributed 11 assists. In the victory against the Spartans, the Hornets won by scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-19.

Holden led the way offensively with 10 kills, while Mondin added nine kills and four blocks. Chris Mitchell was a force at the net, leading the defense with 10 blocks, while Kerim had five. Gabe Dressler contributed eight digs. Skekel finished with 25 assists and eight digs.

Emmaus lost 3-0 to Mifflin. Mondin recorded eight kills and seven digs. Jude Boyle had seven digs.

Miles Boulrice paced the attack with nine kills. Holden finished with six blocks and four kills. Skekel tallied 19 assists and six digs.

Emmaus, which is now 14-1 overall and 10-0 in the conference, finishes the regular season this week with conference matches against Freedom and Parkland.

The EPC playoffs next Thursday night with the Hornets most likely the top seed. Emmaus holds a two-game lead in the standings over five teams tied for second place at 8-2.

A win in either of this week’s matches would secure the Hornets the top seed for league playoffs.
