Gross’ OT goal lifts EHS over Parkland Girls lacrosse wins both games last week, qualifies for EPCs

The Emmaus High School girls lacrosse team won both of its games last week to finish the regular season.

The Hornets were victorious Tuesday, April 29, defeating Saucon Valley 14-6. Two nights later, Emmaus held on for an important 10-9 overtime victory at Parkland in the final conference game of the regular season.

In the victory over the Panthers, it was a close game throughout the first half as Emmaus scored three of the five goals in the first quarter to go ahead 3-2 after one. The two teams were even in the second quarter, each scoring four goals as they went into halftime with the Hornets on top 7-6. But in the second half, Emmaus came out firing and outscored Saucon Valley 7-0 to win.

Senior Abby DiComes (five) and junior Rylie Poll (four) led the attack combining for nine goals, with each adding an assist. Senior Brooke Peterson and junior Taylor Younker both contributed a pair of goals, while sophomore McKenna Guzick dished notched five assists. In goal, senior Devin O’Neill was credited with three saves.

In the win against the Trojans, the teams were tied 2-2 after one and Parkland led 5-4 at halftime. The teams traded goals again in the third quarter, each scoring twice, and then Emmaus tied the score late in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Junior Sarah Gross scored the game-winning goal with only 39 seconds to play in the first overtime period on a pass by DiComes. DiComes had the tying goal with :01 left in regulation. She recorded two goals and two assists. Peterson scored a team-best three goals. Gross tallied two goals and Guzick, Kate Newhard and Ally Kusko all had a goal. O’Neil ended with three saves.

Emmaus, which improved to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference, will be the three seed in the conference tournament and take on the two seed, Easton, in the semifinal round this Thursday evening at Northampton High School’s Al Erdosy Stadium.
